Time's Up for Tancredo

As the law firm for the Latino community, not only are we committed to supporting Judge Sotomayor through the confirmation process, MALDEF is also uniquely positioned to provide our legal analysis, respond to attacks on her qualifications and advocate on her behalf through the Senate hearings and confirmation process.

We cannot do this alone and will look to you for support in this endeavor. To this end, we urge you to join with us and our friends at National Council of La Raza (NCLR) to demand CNN denounce former Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo’s remarks during a recent interview where he called her a “racist” and a member of a group called “la raza,” which he described as “a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses.”

MALDEF is proud to support this historic nomination of a nominee who brings the most extensive federal court experience seen on the Supreme Court in decades. Her ascent from humble beginnings in the Bronx to professional success through hard work and the support of her family is not only what the American Dream is all about but a familiar story to many hard-working Latino families who strive to make a better life for themselves and their children in this great nation.

The Petition

On Thursday, May 28, former Colorado Congressman and anti-immigrant zealot, Tom Tancredo, referred to Supreme Court Justice nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a “racist.” Tancredo was interviewed by CNN’s Rick Sanchez, where he stated that Judge Sotomayor is a member of a group called “la raza,” which he described as “a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses.”

The National Council of La Raza is one of the nation’s largest and highly respected civil rights and advocacy organizations. In addition, Judge Sotomayor was a member of the board of directors of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) in the 1980s. PRLDEF, now called Latino Justice/PRLDEF, is a civil rights organization that “protects opportunities for all Latinos to succeed in school and work, fulfill their dreams, and sustain their families and communities.” The work that both of these organizations do in education, health care and employment is critical to improving the lives of Hispanics in this country and is the polar opposite of a hateful, violent and xenophobic group like the KKK.

Mr. Tancredo’s baseless attack on Judge Sotomayor, a highly respected federal judge who is poised to sit on the Unites States Supreme Court, demonstrates his complete disregard for the facts, his intention to distort the truth and Judge Sotomayor’s exemplary record of public service. MALDEF will not stand by and watch as Tancredo attempts to smear the reputation of one of the nation’s distinguished federal jurists with false claims and misinformation.

It is time for CNN to denounce Tancredo’s remarks and refrain from providing a forum for pundits who consistently disparage the Hispanic community. Sign the petition below and urge CNN to refrain from providing a public forum for pundits who consistently denigrate the Hispanic community.

Every petition will be delivered to CNN.
